APPLICATION / ADMISSION

Anyone may attend Bilkent Summer School as either an official student or a special student. Bilkent students and students of other universities or colleges who wish to transfer credits earned at the Summer School to their home institutions are official students; others are special students.

All non-Bilkent students (official or special) and also Bilkent students who plan to take an Intensive Language Course are required to fill out an application form by 24 May 2011 (International students should fill out this application form instead). Applications of non-Bilkent students will be processed and applicants informed of the result within a week. After approval of their applications, students may register at the Office of the Director of the Summer School.

Applications of Bilkent students for Intensive Language Courses will be collected by 31 May 2011, and the results will be announced on 1 June 2011. Those whose names appear on the primary list of accepted applicants must register 2 June 2011 at the Office of the Foreign Languages Coordinator. Students who fail to register during this period will lose their priority to take the course, and the openings will be filled from the secondary list. The openings will be announced at 9:30 am on 3 June, and registration will continue on 3 June and 6 June 2011.

Bilkent students need not fill in an application form unless they intend to take an Intensive Language Course and may register between 3 June - 6 June 2011. However, they must be eligible to take the courses as in a regular semester.

Students dismissed from Bilkent can attend the Summer School only as special students, and the courses they take are not counted for graduation if they later return to Bilkent, except when dismissal is due to an error which is corrected before the end of the Summer School.

Registration procedure

  • The list of the 2011 Summer School courses can be found from the "Summer School Offerings". Note that a student can enroll in at most two courses.

  • 2011 Summer School registrations will be carried out based on the appointment system. The Student Review System (SRS) will be used to collect pre-registrations and it will be open for preregistration between 23 May, 10 am and 1 June, 5:30 pm. During the preregistration, tuition payment situation of the students will not be considered. Tuition payment is checked during the registration. Summer School registration appointments will be announced through SRS on 1 June, 8 pm.

  • The first phase of the registrations is online self-registration and it will be between 2 June, 10 am and 5 June, 12 pm. In this phase, students who have registration appointments can self-register through any computer using their student-id and STARS password. Students can not register before their registration appointment times. During the self-registration phase, students can also make their registrations in their departments through department secretaries. However, department secretaries cannot register a student before his/her allocated appointment time.

  • The second phase of the registrations is registrations in the departments and it will be between 6 June, 9 am and 7 June, 2 pm. Students who want to register can apply to their departments and department secretaries can enroll students to courses.

  • At the end of the registrations in the departments phase, the Office of the Director of Summer School decides on the courses that will be closed and marks them on the SRS system. Finally the course replacement phase begins. The course replacement phase takes place between 8 June, 9 am and 10 June, 5:30 pm. In this phase departments can enroll students to new courses or they can drop closed courses from the students' course list. After the drop operation, the tuition payment of the student is returned to the SRS account of the student. However, students must apply to the Office of the Director of Summer School for a refund.

  • Students with full scholarship do not need to deposit money/credit to their SRS accounts. They can preregister and register without applying to the Office of the Director of Summer School.

  • Students can pay their Summer School tuition starting from 23 May. Students should pay their tuition at any branch or the internet page of these banks: Garanti Bank, Yapı Kredi Bank or İş Bank. When making the payment, Bilkent Student ID number will be needed by the bank. Students should also mention that the payment is for the Summer School. Summer School tuition payment information is displayed on the SRS system starting from the 23 May. In the SRS accounts of the students, the payment amount and the amount usable for course registration are displayed separately. For example, if a student who is entitled to 20% scholarship pays 1280 TL tuition, the amount usable for course registration is displayed as 1600 TL (as 1600 x 0.80 = 1280).

  • Registration for the intensive foreign language courses will be carried out only by the Office of the Foreign Languages Coordinator.

ACADEMIC RULES FOR BILKENT STUDENTS

Requirements to take a course in the Summer School are the same as in a regular semester.

Grades received from Summer School are included in the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). In the Summer School, students are free to take any course they wish regardless of their standing. However, grades taken in the summer semester are included in the CGPA that determines the standing of the students at the beginning of the fall semester.

To improve their CGPA, students may repeat the courses which they took in the previous two semesters and from which they received a grade below C.

Students dismissed from Bilkent can attend the Summer School only as special students, and the courses they take are not counted for graduation if they later return to Bilkent, except when dismissal is due to an error which is corrected before the end of the Summer School.

Students who complete their degree requirements at the end of the Summer School are graduated from their programs.
