SCHOLARSHIPS

Approximately one-fourth of Bilkent University students are recipients of various types of scholarships. None of these scholarships entail any future obligations on the part of the recipients.

Full Scholarship

Students who select one of the programs designated as a scholarship program in the ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center ) Higher Education Programs and Quotas Guide, and who are then placed in this program by the ÖSYM, are entitled to receive a full scholarship. This scholarship covers:
1. Tuition
2. Dormitory housing (in a double room, only for students from outside of Ankara )
3. Monthly stipend (for students admitted in the 2009-2010 academic year, 300 YTL per month for nine months)

A full scholarship continues throughout a student's time at the University and is not dependent on factors such as grade point average or any other measure of academic success. A full scholarship also covers the period when a student is enrolled in one of the University's foreign language preparatory programs.

Partial Scholarship

As of the 2008-2009 academic year, Bilkent University began offering students a new type of scholarship. As in the case of the full scholarship, each department has a separate quota of partial scholarships specified in the ÖSYM Higher Education Programs and Quotas Guide, and students placed according to these quotas will receive partial scholarships.

Students admitted on the basis of partial scholarships are entitled to a tuition fee that is reduced by 50% throughout their education at Bilkent, including enrollment in the foreign language preparatory program. Like the full scholarships, the partial sholarships continue throughout a student's time at the University and is not dependent on factors such as grade point average or any other measure of academic success. Students on partial scholarships may receive merit scholarships as well, if they are eligible.

Merit Scholarship

At the end of each academic year, students who have taken al least a minimum course load and attained a grade point average of 3.50 or above for that year, as well as being in the top 5% of the paying students in their program, earn the right to receive a merit scholarship for the following academic year. Depending upon a student's ranking within the top 5%, the scholarship covers tuition fees to the extent shown below:

Rank

Percent of tuition

First 1%

100%

Second 1%

80%

Third 1%

60%

Fourth 1%

40%

Fifth 1%

20%

To earn a merit scholarship, a student must have taken at least the minimum number of courses considered to be a normal load, in both semesters. Courses in which the student received a “W” (withdraw) do not count for this purpose.

For example, if a student in a department with 400 paying students is eleventh in that department in terms of grade average, with a grade average of 3.50 or higher, s/he would be ranked in the third 1% level and receive a scholarship equal to 60% of tuition in the following academic year, therefore paying only the remaining 40%. As in the case of all scholarships, future repayment is neither required nor expected from the recipient.

Students receiving a partial scholarship can also receive a merit scholarship, should they qualify. Partial scholarship students who attain a grade average of at least 3.50 for the year, and who rank in the top 3% of the full and partial tuition scholarship students in their programs, are eligible to receive a merit scholarship for the following academic year.

Talent-based Scholarship

Departments in the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts and some departments of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, for which admission requires success in an examination measuring skill/talent in the field in question, offer talent-based scholarships to students who demonstrate a high level of performance in this exam. Only students with limited financial resources are eligible to receive talent-based scholarships in the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts. The talent-based scholarship covers the yearly tuition fee in full or in part, and its continuation depends on the success of the student.
