UNIVERSITY FACTS

  • Bilkent University was established in 1984 as the first foundation university in Turkey, and admitted its first students in 1986.

  • Its campus has an area of 5,000 acres, of which 3,000 acres are woodland.

  • There are more than 30,000 Bilkent alumni.

  • Currently, there are approximately 12,000 students enrolled at the University; one-third of the student body is on scholarship.

  • Bilkent University has 39 undergraduate and 54 graduate programs.

  • Over 2,000 courses are given in the University's nine faculties, two applied schools and three vocational schools.

  • There are more than 1,000 faculty members; international faculty members from around 40 countries comprise one-third of this number.

  • Faculty members were supported with a budget of approximately 250,000,000 TL between 2005 and 2010 as part of the TÜBİTAK (172), European Union (62), public and private company (74) projects.

  • A total of 33 students from among those with the top 100 scores in the quantitative and equally weighted (SAY-2 and EA-2) score categories of the 2009 University Entrance Exam (ÖSS), including 4 students from among the first 10 in the quantitative category, and 2 students ranked first in the verbal and foreign language (SÖZ-2 and DİL) categories have chosen to study at Bilkent University this year.

  • There are over 2,000 computers in laboratories around the campus that are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

  • Bilkent University has student exchange program agreements with over 250 universities around the world.

  • Bilkent Library, visited by 60,000 researchers and students each year, is open for 362 days a year. The Library has a collection of 420,000 books, and 90,000 periodicals, electronic journals and databases.

  • There are more than 80 student clubs at Bilkent, enabling students to come together to participate in favorite activities or develop new interests.

  • Since 1999, students have been taking part in numerous community projects organized by the Social Responsibility Center, Bilkent's umbrella organization for volunteer activities.

  • Radio Bilkent, established and staffed by students, broadcasts in the FM band at the 96.6 MHz frequency.

  • Bilkent dormitories can accommodate a total of 4,000 students.

  • Health centers located on the Main and East Campuses offer health services to all students and faculty members 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • The Bilkent Symphony Orchestra (BSO) performs more than 70 concerts each year at the Bilkent Concert Hall, with a seating capacity of 730, and in various other cities in Turkey. Its 100 musicians come from 12 different countries.

  • Each year, around 500 well-known companies and organizations visit Bilkent University to inform students about career opportunities.

  • Bilkent Cyberpark, founded in 2002, is the fastest growing technopark in Turkey. It serves in an 86.500 m2 indoor area with more than 180 technology-based companies and approximately 1,700 R&D personnel.

  • Based on the report of the Quacquarelli Symonds and Times Higher Education World University Rankings, published in the U.S.News & World Report , Bilkent University is the only Turkish university ranked in the 400 world's top universities in 2009. While the overall rank was 360, Bilkent succeeded in ranking much higher in areas such as Engineering and Information Technologies, which were ranked at 129.
