Title: Decarbonizing Road Freight Transportation: Recent Advances and Future Trends

Date: 22nd of November , 2024 (Friday)
Time: 13:30-14:30

We offer researchers and professionals an overview of the characteristics involved in planning models aimed at decarbonizing road freight transport and distribution. Our aim is not to deliver a conventional survey, but to craft an ongoing narrative depicting the journey of decarbonization efforts. We have observed that numerous studies over the last three decades have considered green issues in the context of routing problems. Given the wide scope of green routing research, we do not claim to cover all studies but have chosen a restricted thematic structure instead. We draw a concise overview of the evolution of the pollution-routing problem concept, considering not only internal combustion vehicles but also electric vehicles and drones within a broader context. We mainly concentrate on the problem types and findings, omitting technical details regarding the solution methods. We first report on recent advances in the field under the classical classification “operational planning”, “tactical planning” and “strategic planning”. We then identify future trends in the areas of technology, infrastructure, market, behaviour, energy and regulations. We provide a discussion on emerging models and present a methodological outlook.
