ABSTRACT:
Jeff Roberson’s teaching and practice are both situated within the art-historical tradition of architectural rationalism, and aimed at the emancipatory project of education as conceived within the liberal arts educational program—here relating etymologically to liberalis, from liber ‘free,’ and educare, ‘to lead out.’ Rather than conceiving of architectural education as a means of guiding students towards standardized building practices or vocational training, Jeff’s efforts have been to invert this paradigm by engaging students in a practice towards education. In this way, pedagogy is foundational to the way that Jeff approaches architecture as both a discipline and profession. For his talk, ’The Practice of Pedagogy,’ Jeff will introduce how he takes up such concerns by highlighting recent and current projects, which aim to bridge the gap between teaching and practice.
