In her talk, Dr. Duman will share her experiences as a Bilkent alumna, introduce the field of “music psychology” and its research approaches, and delve into her research on the experience of groove. She will describe groove as a participatory musical experience and explore what compels us to feel strong emotions and the urge to move along with music.

Deniz Duman is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre of Excellence in Music, Mind, Body and Brain, University of Jyväskylä, Finland. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Minor Degree in Communication and Design from Bilkent University (2016). Her main research interest centers around the concept of groove, which has close links with immersion, dance, emotions, interpersonal synchronization, and social connection. She is also interested in the origins of music and musical activities, cross-cultural experiences of music, and everyday music listening. In her research, she has been using several methods including (mobile) EEG, motion capture, music information retrieval, and qualitative approaches.
