Jeremy Specland, Ph.D. Candidate in English Literature, Rutgers University

Title: Renaissance Psalm Reading and George Herbert’s The Temple

Description:
No instance of lyric poetry contributed more to the cultural life of Renaissance England than the biblical Book of Psalms. Psalms were recited in every church service, read morning and evening in the home, and circulated in an abundance of printed editions. This talk considers the influence of the Book of Psalms on one of the Renaissance’s predominant poetic forms: the lyric sequence. It shows how George Herbert’s The Temple (1633), a devotional sequence of over 150 poems, mimics the rhetorical and material features associated with the 150 biblical psalms, resemblances heightened in the editions of Herbert’s sequence printed during the seventeenth century. These echoes demonstrate that Renaissance readers saw less of a distinction between biblical poetry and original English verse than literary critics often do today.
