Title: Emotions and Affective Computing
Bio: Deniz İren is working as an assistant professor at the Open University of the Netherlands. His research interests cover affective computing and artificial intelligence, and he teaches machine learning and data analytics. Deniz has a background in computer engineering, MSc in software management, and PhD in information systems with a focus on crowdsourcing.

Summary of his CTISTalk titled Emotions and Affective Computing As the field of artificial intelligence (AI) moves towards general AI, there is growing concern among scientists and the public about whether superhuman AI will uphold human values. This concern underpins the so-called alignment problem – how can we ensure that the goals of AI align with our own? As a researcher, I propose that empathy is crucial for AI to continuously align its goals with ours. This is why I have dedicated my recent research career to affective computing, which focuses on developing systems that can recognize, interpret, and simulate human emotions, feelings, and moods. Affective computing is commonly categorized based on the modalities in which human affect manifests such as facial expressions, speech, and gestures. My research focuses on machine learning approaches to improve Facial Emotion Recognition (FER), Speech-Emotion Recognition (SER), and their multimodal combination. In this talk, I will briefly cover the fundamental theories of human emotions and how the y are displayed and perceived by humans, and the technologies to detect them. Additionally, I will mention several projects within my portfolio in the field of affective computing.
