“Variances of sequences in arithmetic progressions”

Abstract: In order to better understand the error term when approximating the average order of a sequence one approach is to average this error over arithmetic progressions. In the 90s Vaughan and Goldston showed how the mean square error (the variance) can be tackled with the circle method, a classical method in additive number theory. We outline the argument and survey what’s known about variances of different sequences.
