CCI Semineri: “Endless Revenge”, Dr. Benjamin Jeffrey, 18:30 16 Mart (EN)

Bilkent University’s Program in Cultures, Civilizations & Ideas presents a ZOOM Seminar talk on Wednesday, March 16th at 18:30.

The speaker is Dr. Benjamin Jeffrey, from the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Jeffrey will present a talk entitled: “Endless Revenge”

‘Simone Weil described the desire for revenge as “a desire for essential equilibrium.” To this she added: “The search for equilibrium is bad because it is imaginary. Revenge. Even if in fact we kill or torture our enemy it is, in a sense, imaginary.” In this talk, I will use Weil’s remarks as the starting point for a reflection on the idea that vengefulness is a desire that is somehow – by its nature – directed at a false or illusory object. I will then consider how this quality informs two revenge stories told by Shakespeare: Hamlet and The Tempest. My aim is to show how these plays help us to think about vengefulness as the expression of a deeper type of psychological problem, a form of uncoupling from the world that is also experienced by the individual as a fearful loss of inner organization.’
