Abstract
In theoretical models, teaching quality affects students’ motivation and achievement outcomes via their learning activities. However, learning activities have been defined and operationalized diverse in the literature such as time-on-task or self-regulation. The systematic review categorized learning activities which have been examined as mediators between teaching quality and student outcomes and summarized of the results of the 26 quantitative studies. Showing mostly achievement related outcomes, the results were mixed in confirming learning activities as mediators (out of 76 paths, 49% showed statistically significant mediating effects). We discuss the challenges in the interpretation of the results, due to the studies’ heterogeneity in context, methodology, conceptualization, and operationalization.
