Abstract:
Political economists exploring Turkey’s turbulent path in recent years predominantly work from within three different characterizations of Turkish capitalism: authoritarian neoliberalism, crony capitalism, and state capitalism. This seminar will critically discuss these competing visions and identify directions for future research. Which view is more compelling and how does each enhance our understanding of Turkey’s current predicament? What do these perspectives have to say about Turkey’s democratic decline and ongoing systemic crisis? And what are the merits and limitations of such macro conceptualizations for political-economy research? These questions will be addressed with a view to identifying feasible strategies of revival in the medium term.
Bio:
Ali Burak Güven is Senior Lecturer in International Relations and International Political Economy in the Department of Politics at Birkbeck, University of London, where he directs the MSc programme in Global Political Economy. He has published extensively on the international and comparative political economy of development.
