Faculty of Law senior-year students receives fourth award from Moot Court Competition.
The Bilkent University Moot Court team, made up of Faculty of Law senior-year students Muhammed Hanifi Değirmençay, Mustafa Karadaş, Can Sarp Özcan and Nil Zeren Özdemir and junior-year student Ece Nur Yıldız, was among 249 teams to compete in this year’s Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition. The oral argument rounds of the competition took place online April 4-9; at their completion, team member Can Sarp Özcan received an honorable mention in the Martin Domke Best
Individual Oralist Award category.
This marked the fourth time a Bilkent student has received an honorable mention in this category of the Vis Moot; previous winners were Öncü Serter (LLB ’08) in 2008 and Derya Durlu Gürzumar (LLB ’10, LLM ’15) in 2009 and 2010. Ms. Durlu Gürzumar, a member of the İstanbul Bar Association, coached this year’s Moot Court team.
The competition commenced in October 2019 with the drafting of two legal memoranda on behalf of Claimant and Respondent in a hypothetical legal dispute involving the sale of turbines under the 2014 London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) Arbitration Rules and the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. The Vis Moot culminated in the oral argument rounds in April. Normally held in Vienna, Austria, the oral hearings took place nline this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
